I generally release plugins that solve some sort of issue I’m having with my customers or my own websites. The Simple Analytics plugin is a perfect example of a need being filled, along with contributing something truly useful and simple to the public WordPress plugin repository.
I’m a big fan of Google Analytics. I have tons of websites under a single account where I can get analytics from one dashboard, across everything. So when it comes to my WordPress site, the only thing that I really care about is a convenient way to get the actual tracking code in there.
For whatever reason, most of the analytics plugins on wordpress.org try to be something more complicated than that, bringing all kinds of analytical tracking, functionality, and management into the WordPress admin. Conversely, Simple Analytics provides the most lightweight method possible to simply get your site’s statistics to show up in your Google Analytics dashboard.
